As an Image Consultant I am always on the prowl for new and up and coming designers. At a recent (and very successful, I might add) trip to the Clothing Show I met the designer from Device Design Company. Melanie Ferrara is a Toronto born designer with an amazing eye for style. Her clothing is all about simplicity, quality and versatility, with an emphasis on original design details. Many of her pieces feature raw edging, which is cut to allow the garment to fray in a controlled fashion to highlight line and add texture. Each garment is made in Toronto, and with an effort to become more eco-conscious as well as socially conscious, bamboo fabric is now a permanent addition to her line.
Keep your eye out for this designer Ladies and Gentlemen because I have a feeling we are going to be seeing a lot more of her.
For a limited time Melanie will be sending $25 gift certificates to everyone who joins Device’s mailing list- this certificate can be used in her etsy shop.
When most people think about getting the colours “done” they probably visualize an outdated 1970’s Image Consultant handing them a limited palette of colours with strict instructions to stay within them. Well, we’ve come a long way baby! While colour theory continues to be very relevant, modern image consultants may not be as strict about setting boundaries for their clients. Generally clients will find that they have a certain set of “wow” colours (that should probably be purchased whenever available). On the opposite end, they will also have a set of caution colours (in other words, proceed with caution and try not to wear these colours around your face). While client’s colours sometimes correspond to one specific category, many times they blur and cross borders, it is up to your colour specialist to help you see why they work for you.
What to look for when choosing colours:
1. Check for emphasis on wrinkles or shadowing
2. Looking a little jaundice? Probably not the colour for you.
3. Does it enhance your eyes or lips?
Look at the difference between Goldie and Tilda and Jessica and Isla. Although they are all wearing nude colours, Goldie and Tilda appear dull and washed out, while Jessica and Isla are glowing. The perfect tone and hue in a colour makes all the difference, especially when you are walking the red carpet.
A note from the Queen.

My line of work leads me to work with quite a few brides, and as we approach the summer (also commonly known as “wedding season”). I receive quite a few calls from desperate brides looking for style advice for their big day. While my first piece of advice is always the same; “breathe”, we then go on to analyse body shape and style personality. From there we can get a better idea of what shapes and fabrics work, thus narrowing down the mass amount of gown styles. Lately I have come across more and more brides looking to keep their wedding as “green” as possible. As a result, brides are looking to vintage, second hand or local made dresses. For the untraditional bride, there is no better place in the city to find a vintage dress than Cabaret, I love http://www.smartbrideboutique.ca for second hand and Lowon Pope does great local, understated gowns. While my rolodex is filled with fantastic stores and designers, I thought it necessary to add a few associates as well to help out my already stressed brides. One of the best connections that I formed was with Talen Events . I was so impressed with them I hired them for my upcoming nuptials. They not only do an incredible job of planning an event, they also go the extra mile to make sure that your event will be as eco friendly as possible (see, brides do think about other things besides their wedding day!)
